The intern will be responsible for testing and analyzing the efficacy of our existing and R&D stage spill kit products.

Duties and responsibilities

The intern will culture, grow and isolate bacterial samples and analyze TPH, F1-F4 and BTEX concentrations on a variety of hydrocarbons and other substances.  This will be performed at a laboratory scale in addition to pilot studies and ongoing projects.  The intern will perform research as necessary, compile reports and work directly with their supervisor to enhance microbial activity.

Knowledge and skills

The intern should have a general knowledge of laboratory and aseptic techniques.  They should be prepared to work individually and as part of a team.  The intern should have the ability to communicate written and orally, be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, and adhere to health and safety protocols.

Education required

The intern should have a diploma or degree in biology, chemistry, or engineering or related fields.

Eligibility criteria

Qualified interns are:

  • Post-secondary graduates
  • No more than 30 years of age at the start of the internship
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada*
  • Legally allowed to work according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations
  • Not receiving employment insurance during their internship
  • Available to work for at least six months

*Refugee protection must be conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Persons awaiting refugee status, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, student visa or work visa, are ineligible to participate in a Youth Employment Strategy initiative.
