FES is a youth-led, youth-serving sustainable development organization. FES is a Canadian not-for-profit corporation whose registered charity number is 801430307 RR0001. FES is an accredited organization by the United Nations who has a special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.


The United Nations Major Group for Children and Youth (UNMGCY) is the UN General Assembly-mandated, official, formal and self-organised space for children and youth (under 30) to contribute to and engage in important policy processes at the UN. The entity acts as a bridge between young people and the UN system in order to ensure their right to meaningful participation is realized. It does so by engaging formal and informal communities of young people, in the design, implementation, monitoring, and follow-up and review of sustainable development policies at all levels. 

You would be joining and contributing to a UN entity that, since 1992, has consulted with more than a billion youth through 6500+ youth entities in over 170 countries and territories. We engage in more than 80 processes at the UN.

Duties and responsibilities

The Position and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the UNMGCY’s Organizing Partner (OP) in building sound governance, transparency, and accountability mechanisms for the organization. Please read the OP’s vision and plan outlined here. To do so, the Operations Analyst will be responsible for all administrative, financial, operational, and HR duties as it relates to the day-to-day needs of the organization and its activities.

This position requires someone with an entrepreneurial attitude, a willingness to take initiative, and most importantly, the capacity to juggle multiple responsibilities at once and eager to learn every step of the way.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Stewardship: This includes all tasks related to bookkeeping, accounting, financial planning, budgeting, reporting, taxes, currency exchanges, cashflow stability, banking, audit, payroll, invoicing and receipting.
    • Keep a clear record of all incoming and outgoing financial transactions; providing invoices and reimbursements by verifying appropriate documentation.
    • Prepare financial reports and monthly balance sheets by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information; reconciling financial discrepancies when necessary.
  • Operations: Ensure that the day-to-day operation of the organization is effective and efficient.
  • Risk & Compliance: Support the OP in identifying and managing organizational risks, establishing and enforcing misconduct policies and consequences, and incorporating and/or filing for tax-exempt status in necessary jurisdictions (ie. countries). 
  • Strategy: Support the OP in developing and fulfilling UNMGCY’s vision, mission, organizational direction, and strategic plan.
  • Human Resources: Support the OP in the recruitment, hiring, and orientation processes of incoming staff and volunteers.
  • Fund Development: Provide support to the OP and Grant Prospectors with fund development activities as it relates to stewarding donor relationships and ensuring the organization’s financial sustainability.
  • Other administrative duties and operations support as they arise.

Knowledge and skills


  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline. Upper year undergraduate and master’s students seeking a full-time co-op position for the Fall 2020 semester are also eligible.
  • 1-3 years experience in an administrative role with financial responsibilities required (this can be satisfied through work, internship/co-op, volunteer, and extracurricular activities).
  • Strong understanding of the mission and values of the United Nations.
  • Demonstrated interest in relevant domains (ie. sustainability, environment, education, youth engagement and action) is considered an asset.
  • Proficient with using word-processing, database and spreadsheet software (most notably Microsoft Office suite, Google Docs and Excel).

Skills and Competencies

  • Eager to be in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with a high learning curve.
  • A self-starter able to take initiative on responsibilities with minimal supervision; proven ability to work independently.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail; able to juggle multiple responsibilities while consistently delivering results.
  • Adaptable and flexible to changing responsibilities; able to execute a variety of tasks and learn new procedures quickly.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrating a positive attitude to work effectively and collaboratively with colleagues from around the world in a virtual environment.

Education required

Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline, including but not limited to, non-profit management, business, finance, human resources, or administration. 

Eligibility criteria

Qualified interns are:

  • Between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the internship
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada1
  • Legally allowed to work according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations
  • Available to participate in an ImpAct internship for a flexible duration of up to 6 months by March 1, 2021
  • Not employees of the hiring employer prior to the start of their internship (does not apply to previous coop students or student interns, although this must be clearly indicated by the employer)

1Refugee protection must be conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Persons awaiting refugee status, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, student visa or work visa, are ineligible to participate in a Youth Employment Strategy initiative.
