Pacific Peoples’ Partnership (PPP) is celebrating 45 years of action this year!  Based on Lekwungen territory in Victoria, BC, we are Canada’s only non-profit, social justice organization devoted to working in solidarity with peoples of the South Pacific and with Indigenous peoples in Canada to promote their aspirations for peace, justice, environmental sustainability and community development.  Main activities include connecting peoples north and south for knowledge and cultural exchange, capacity building, and public engagement in Canada.

Our Operations

PPP has a small secretariat based in Victoria.  We have two full time staff, 30+ volunteers, and a 12 member board and strive for gender balance and 50+% representation from Indigenous peoples and South Pacific diaspora.  We are engaged in work locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.  We work closely with Indigenous peoples in Canada and facilitate learning exchanges with South Pacific Islanders tackling similar challenges such as climate change, sustainability, cultural resurgence, justice and peace.  PPP has a growing list of award-winning domestic and international programs. We are now aiming to scale up operations modestly to meet the growing interest in our work.

Duties and responsibilities

The Development & Partnerships Coordinator is a new position with PPP.  Main responsibilities would be to help coordinate our international programs, support the development of several new international initiatives centered around climate, equity and justice initiatives.  Other responsibilities will include research and needs assessment for South Pacific stakeholders and partners, partner engagement and support, plus support with programs designed to educate and engage Canadians through partnered programming, communications, research, advocacy, awareness, grant writing, fundraising, and member engagement.  Working with the management team, the Coordinator will also help to build awareness of our organization, our work and partners, and our upcoming events and activities by contributing to communications and marketing strategies.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct a needs assessment with South Pacific partners to help guide and focus our work in service to Pacific Islanders;
  • Provide an analysis of stakeholder inputs to help guide PPP's strategic planning and visioning for the next 10 years and a work plan for the next 5 years;
  • Develop programs, policies and partnership (MOU) templates based on human rights based approaches to development and equitable partnerships;
  • Assist in the investigation and development of the Pacific Resilience Fund;
  • Help to secure support for overseas partners and assist with communications about their work through our media platforms;
  • Coordinate capacity building, knowledge sharing and networking among our partners;
  • Program research, design and coordination for international programs focused on gender equity, climate action, Indigenous rights and achievement of sustainable development goals in Indigenous and Pacific communities;
  • Support with the social media campaigns focused on promoting the interests of communities in the South Pacific and in coastal Indigenous communities;
  • Contribute to PPP's public programming about the effects of climate change on Indigenous and Pacific Island communities;
  • Developing and maintaining information management systems about our partners;
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with Pacific Islanders, Indigenous partners, the Pacific Islander diaspora, international partners, environmental NGOs and cultural organizations
  • Providing other support to our team as needed


Knowledge and skills

The Development & Partnership Coordinator will welcome the opportunity to practice cross-cultural skills while deepening knowledge of South Pacific and Indigenous peoples. Experiential assets include:

  • International and/or community development experience
  • Working understanding of Human Rights based approaches to International Development & equitable partnerships
  • Research, writing, and design
  • Excellent inter personnel and intercultural communications skills and understanding
  • Excellent information technologies skills, computer knowledge, network, and analytic skills
  • Marketing assistance & support with communications and data
  • Writing proposals, press releases and articles
  • Coordinating educational and cultural events
  • Working with youth, community, Indigenous & environmental partners
  • Responding to phone, email and other queries
  • Knowledge of the contexts in which PPP works
  • Able to work as both a team member and independently
  • Experience working in an NGO environment


Education required

Degree or preferably a Masters in International Development (preferred) with some field experience.

Eligibility criteria

Qualified interns are:

  • Between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the internship
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada1
  • Legally allowed to work according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations
  • Available to participate in an ImpAct internship for a flexible duration of up to 6 months by March 1, 2021
  • Not employees of the hiring employer prior to the start of their internship (does not apply to previous coop students or student interns, although this must be clearly indicated by the employer)

1Refugee protection must be conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Persons awaiting refugee status, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, student visa or work visa, are ineligible to participate in a Youth Employment Strategy initiative.
