We are looking for an intern who can contribute to our project.  The team members are expected to perform literature review, modeling and simulation, and data analysis on energy storage for solar panels and grid-connected solar cells, design and operation of power converters (Grid-Tied Solar Inverters and Off-Grid Solar Inverters) and how to achieve high efficiency for different power configurations. The team will work under the supervision of the Design Engineer and Product Design Manager.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Research on energy storage systems and grid-connected solar cells
  • Research on design and operation of power converters (Grid-Tied Solar Inverters and Off-Grid Solar Inverters)
  • Cost analysis for different different systems and components
  • Data collection
  • Data analysis
  • Modeling and analysis using COMSOL and MatLab or similar programs
  • Develop an in depth knowledge of solar photovoltaics
  • Identify Key challenges in solar energy conversion systems and suggest solutions
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills, capable of working in interdisciplinary teams
  • Be able to work independently 
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and make things happen in a fast-paced environment 


Knowledge and skills

  • Strong research skills
  • Modeling and simulation skills
  • Basic knowledge about solar cells and semiconductors
  • Basic knowledge about bi-directional inverter, PV panels, battery system, smart meter, direct current (DC) bus system, and alternating current (AC) bus
  • Time management skills
  • Familiar with COMSOL and MatLab
  • Semiconductor and solar energy conversion 
  • Project Management skills
  • Vector design skills (Adobe illustrator or similar)
  • Patent drafting/drawing is a plus

Education required

Canadian equivalent to master of science, business and programming, Bachelor in the following fields: Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Materials Engineering or equivalent training, with extensive hands-on experience in measuring electrical and mechanical properties

Certification required

Qualified interns are:

  • Post-secondary students and graduates
  • No more than 30 years of age at the start of the internship
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada*
  • Legally allowed to work according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations
  • Available to work for at least six months
  • Not previous participants of a federal youth employment program
  • Not employees of the hiring employer prior to the start of their internship (does not apply to previous coop students or student interns)

*Refugee protection must be conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Persons awaiting refugee status, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, student visa or work visa, are ineligible to participate in a Youth Employment Strategy initiative.
