Description

We are seeking a Data Scientist to support our growing team of consultants, economists, engineers, developers, and actuaries, providing risk-based, predictive analytics solutions. Our ideal candidate is passionate about untangling complex relationships within data to provide high-impact statistical insights, predictive models and data-driven business decisions. The candidate will also have a demonstrated ability to program statistical and physical models, and experience with machine learning algorithms would be an asset. The position will be located in Winnipeg.

Duties and responsibilities

Key Accountabilities:

  • Researcher of innovative modeling methodologies and tools to support model development, monitoring and reporting.
  • Responsible for specialized analysis, development of creative data science solutions and recommending improvements to predictive analytics risk rating systems
  • Good verbal and written communications required to ensure model documentation is clear and provides third party reviewers the ability to replicate model functionality. Ensure transparency in detailing steps/assumptions/limitations of the models.
  • Support the implementation, monitoring and validation of predictive analytics and rating systems.

Knowledge and skills

Successful candidates will possess, as a minimum:

  • Undergraduate degree (or graduate degree) in Computer Science, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Engineering, Statistics, or another highly quantitative field.
  • 1-3 years of experience (however, exceptional candidates with coop experience will be considered)
  • Strong understanding of modeling theory and methodologies combined with practical application.
  • Familiarity with databases, statistical analysis programs, and programming languages
  • Programming/Software (one or more of): C/C++, Python, R, TensorFlow, etc.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate findings and insights in a clear and concise manner to different audiences with varying technical backgrounds
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and technical skills
  • Excellent time management, planning and organizing skills to manage multiple priorities
  • A self-starter attitude to provide thought leadership to teams

Education required

  • Undergraduate degree (or graduate degree) in Computer Science, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Engineering, Statistics, or another highly quantitative field.

Qualified interns are:

  • Starting the internship within two years of receiving their post-secondary diploma
  • Underemployed (employed below their level of education or work part-time)
  • No more than 30 years of age at the start of the internship
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada*
  • Legally allowed to work according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations
  • Not receiving employment insurance during their internship
  • Available to work for at least six months

*Refugee protection must be conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Persons awaiting refugee status, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, student visa or work visa, are ineligible to participate in a Youth Employment Strategy initiative.
