Description

Bike Winnipeg is a non-profit, member-based organization working to make cycling in Winnipeg a safe, enjoyable, accessible, and convenient transportation choice year round.  Winnipeg Trails Association implements practical, opportune, and innovative ideas with an emphasis on creative problem solving, inter-sectoral partnerships, capacity-building, citizen involvement, and evidence-based decision making.

We are seeking a passionate individual for the position of Bicycle Designer who supports the mission and vision of Bike Winnipeg, Winnipeg Trails, and other social-purpose cycling organizations, and who is committed to active transportation.

This position is for 485 hours starting November 2nd with flexible hours as long as all work is completed by February 28th.

Duties and responsibilities

In general, you will be responsible for determining the ideal electric-assist cargo tricycle design suitable for a bikeshare in a Canadian winter environment.  Deliverables include: 

  • An design overview of commercially available cargo bikes
  • Recommendation of whether an existing product should be purchased or if one should be manufactured
  • If purchased, research costs for bulk orders, maintenance requirements, parts availability, and 
  • If manufactured, research develop specifications, a parts list, manufacturing cost estimates, a prototyping strategy, and a production schedule
  • Other tasks as assigned

You are expected to provide your own cell phone and laptop.  All work can be completed remotely from your home office from anywhere in Canada.

Knowledge and skills

From a combination of formal education and related experience, you must have:

  • Familiarity with repair, maintenance, assembly, and/or manufacturing
  • International knowledge of bicycle designs and manufacturers
  • Research and report-writing experience

Education required

No formal education is required as long as strong related experience can be demonstrated.  Relevant education is an asset.

Eligibility criteria

Qualified interns are:

  • Between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the internship
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada1
  • Legally allowed to work according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations
  • Available to participate in an ImpAct internship for a flexible duration of up to 6 months by March 1, 2021
  • Not employees of the hiring employer prior to the start of their internship (does not apply to previous coop students or student interns, although this must be clearly indicated by the employer)

1Refugee protection must be conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Persons awaiting refugee status, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, student visa or work visa, are ineligible to participate in a Youth Employment Strategy initiative.
