Description

The role is to assist with sustainability reporting as well as outreach on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).

The sustainability reporting will be for AASHE, the Association for Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education through their Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance: https://stars.aashe.org. The SDGs provide a global framework to align the work of BCIT to broader global sustainability efforts (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable-development-goals/).

The role will require developing thorough knowledge of both STARS and the SDGs to adequately assess the sustainability aspects of BCIT’s educational curricula, programs, departments, campus infrastructure, and activities. In additional to completing the STARS reporting, the role will also assist with the development of related outreach and engagement activities throughout the BCIT community.

It is anticipated that there will be 550 hours of work for this role from August 2020 to February 2021. Ideally, this will be conducted through full-time work for the first two months and part-time work thereafter.

 

Tâches et responsabilités

The role will report to the BCIT Sustainability Manager and will undertake the following:

  • Become familiar with BCIT as an organization; the AASHE's Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS); and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Conduct research on BCIT's curricula to determine its sustainability and environmental aspects, primarily though an extensive review of BCIT's website.
  • Undertake other research as necessary to find sustainability data, which might include reviewing information on programs, departments, campus infrastructure, and activities.
  • Gather data from different sources, including following up with BCIT contacts under guidance of the Manager.
  • Compile, combine, and manipulate data within a matrix as necessary to ensure it conforms to AASHE standards.
  • Assess alignment between the SDGs and BCIT’s curricula, programs, departments, campus infrastructure, and activities.
  • Assist in development and implementation of SDG related outreach messaging and engagement programs.
  • Maintain records and references in an organized manner. Handle and protect confidential data and information with utmost care and integrity.
  • Prepare charts, diagrams and tables.
  • Use software (primarily MS Excel, MS Word, Email, PowerPoint, and Zoom) to communicate and share project findings with the Manager and other colleagues.

Connaissances et compétences

  • Relevant academic and/or work experience, such as sustainability research, data reporting, program coordination, and/or community outreach. Experience working in a post-secondary institution or other large organization is desirable.
  • Knowledge of AASHE STARS and the SDGs. Knowledge of other sustainability frameworks or reporting systems is desirable.
  • Knowledge and experience in relevant software, particularly MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Zoom. Aptitude in other programs - particularly related to data analysis, GIS, project management, graphic design, or communications - is desirable.
  • Experience with data collection and analysis.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, responsible and resourceful.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
  • Capacity to adapt to new research methods and work schedules quickly.
  • Ability and willingness to work remotely.

Scolarité requise

Any relevant post-secondary education (Bachelor or graduate credential preferred), particularly in a sustainability related discipline, e.g. environmental studies, urban studies, planning, civil or environmental engineering, sustainable business, urban geography, etc.

Eligibility criteria

Les stagiaires admissibles :

  • Sont âgés de 15 à 30 ans au début du stage
  • Sont citoyens canadiens, résidents permanents ou détenteurs du statut de réfugié au Canada1
  • Sont légalement autorisés à travailler en vertu des lois et règlements provinciaux et fédéraux applicables
  • Sont disponibles à travailler pour une durée flexible allant jusqu’à 6 mois d’ici le 1er mars 2021
  • N’ont pas été employés par l’employeur avant le début du stage (ne s’appliquent pas aux placements ou stages étudiants antérieurs, mais cela doit être clairement identifié par l’employeur)
