Description

This internship (Research Associate position) involves the development of  dyes for next generation photovoltaic applications. This internship will involve synthetic organic chemistry and materials science coupled with prototype device fabrication specifically focusing on the advancement of the dye-sensitized solar cell research currently being performed at Ryerson University. FOR THE SITUATION OF COVID, there is valuable employment that can be had from home. We are currently working on a white paper that we would like to publish. Eventually as we re-expand out lab activity, the research associate will work closely with a dynamic interdisciplinary team, and be trained to develop and utilize their transferrable skills at multiple stages in the internship. Furthermore, the research associate will collaborate closely with Ryerson University’s campus-linked incubator (the Science Discovery Zone or SDZ) and engage with industry partners to deliver results in a timely manner.

Tâches et responsabilités

DURING COVID RESTRICTIONS: The applicant will be researching and assisting in the preparation of a white paper "Smart Windows"

WHILE IN THE LAB responsibilities will include: using various research instruments and techniques; working in a team environment; chemical synthesis using Green Chemistry principles; ordering and maintaining a research laboratory; documenting research results both in writing and by giving oral progress reports; showing leadership to junior research members by maintaining a safe and clean laboratory environment.

The research associate will be overseeing the preparation of organic dyes for next-generation solar cell applications. This involves the synthesis of novel molecules and their characterization using spectroscopy, electrochemistry and small-scale solar cell prototypes. A comprehensive document compiling their work will need to be submitted at the end of the term.

Connaissances et compétences

The research associate must be familiar with chemistry and the  chemistry laboratory research environment. They must be adequately trained in the necessary instruments and have previous experience in synthetic chemistry. Receptivity to feedback is a must. The research associate must have demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills in previous roles. Experience in a thesis or lab-directed studies is highly desired.

The research associate will continue to enhance their chemistry, communication and leadership skills in this internship. For example, synthetic techniques they have learned in past roles will be applied and honed during this internship. This position will give the research associate an opportunity to improve their leadership and supervisory skills while developing a high level of technical knowledge.

Scolarité requise

This position requires a minimum of Bachelor's of Science degree and a background in Synthetic Chemistry is preferred. Courses like organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, materials chemistry and molecular characterization are desired.

Certifications requises

The research associate must have their EHS and WHMIS certification.
