Tatamagouche Centre, through its Breaking the Silence Human Rights (BTS) and Community Development Program is applying for the ImPact Internship program to search for a Research & Advocacy Intern. Tatamagouche Centre is a not-for-profit residential education and conference centre and registered charity owned by the United Church of Canada. It offers adult education and leadership training as well as consulting and facilitation services to youth groups, professional associations, health care and social service agencies, universities, church groups, cooperatives, First Nations organizations, labour unions and government departments in the Maritimes.
The Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Program BTS was established 30 years ago as a core part of Tatamagouche Centre's community development and human rights program. BTS originated in response to the genocide and mass displacement of communities that occurred during the internal armed conflict in Guatemala. The BTS Program includes a network of over 300 members throughout the Maritimes. The BTS network supports Guatemalan human rights and community development groups working for ongoing social, economic, environmental, and cultural justice. BTS centers the interconnectedness between the North and the South and the responsibility of Canadians to be engaged in solidarity. BTS thereby focuses on advocacy and education initiatives in Canada.
BTS is currently seeking a team of 3 interns to work collaboratively in support of key SDG areas related to the work of our Guatemalan partners through research, public engagement, and social media campaigns with the aim of increasing awareness and education around human rights issues. This team will conceptualize, produce, and disseminate a campaign with public engagement tools to increase the awareness of the issues faced by land and human rights defenders both in Guatemala and Canada.
The Research & Advocacy Intern will work in collaboration with colleagues. The candidate will be responsible for conducting research and facilitating analytical reflections based on findings, which will form the basis for the creation of media tools to engage people in relevant SDG issues and be shared through social media educational campaigns.
Tâches et responsabilités
- Research and document relevant topics related SDG areas, the work of partners in Guatemala, and the BTS Network in the Maritimes;
- Synthesize and report findings to colleagues to facilitate analysis and reflections around prevalent themes;
- Collaborate on the creation of media tools including messaging, branding, and graphics related to key SDG areas;
- Provide updates to BTS network members and assist with ongoing analysis of key issues by contributing to newsletters, webinars, website updates, urgent actions, etc.;
- Attend and participate in regular Intern meetings as well as with BTS support staff;
- Integrate well into the BTS team and its collective processes, supporting necessities that may arise;
- Assist with special projects as required.
Connaissances et compétences
Required knowledge and skills:
- Ability to conduct research online, through meetings, and interviews, as well as organize and synthesize findings;
- Strong analytical and writing skills;
- Clear oral and written communication skills;
- Demonstrated capacity to work in a self-directed manner as well as collaboratively with a small team;
- Strong organizational and time management skills;
- Experience working from an anti-oppression solidarity framework.
Desired knowledge and skills:
- Experience working from a distance;
- Good knowledge of BTS and/or experience with social justice movements;
- Knowledge and/or interest of issues faced by human rights and land defenders in Latin America, Guatemala, and/or Maritimes;
- Spanish language abilities.
BTS recognizes lived experience as a valuable and relevant source of knowledge and skills that can be transferable to the professional realm and as such we encourage applicants with a broad range of expertise to apply including those with relevant academic and non-academic backgrounds. Individuals with sound knowledge of and/or academic experience in international relations, political science, environmental studies, or humanities may be well suited for this position.
