Background: Protect Our Winters Canada is a non profit organization that is working to mobilize the outdoor community against climate change.

POW’s Theory of Change: If we can inspire outdoor enthusiasts to become climate activists by leveraging outdoor brands, professional athletes and major resorts, then we will create climate policy reform because the outdoor enthusiast community is massive and therefore yields great economic and political power.

History: Founded by professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones in 2007 in the USA, POW works against climate change by turning passionate outdoor people into effective climate advocates. We are a community of athletes, thought pioneers and forward thinking business leaders working to affect systemic political solutions to climate change.

The Opportunity:

We are looking for an individual to work closely with our Program Director for 35 hours per week in

Revelstoke British Columbia.

This multifaceted position will be responsible for assisting across multiple programs, from the Regional Chapter Program, Campus Program, Retail and Resort Programs, Ambassadors Program and our education program, Hot Planet, Cool Athletes.

The candidate will work with the Program Director to develop and implement strategies that will help POW engage members, build brand exposure and inspire outdoor enthusiasts to take action and demand policy change.

The ideal candidate will be highly organized, have excellent communication skills, be able to juggle multiple tasks, manage their own workload and take personal responsibility for all assignments.

Tâches et responsabilités

Description of Responsibilities:

  • Aid in the development of a local carbon offsetting program for the heli and cat ski industries in Revelstoke BC.
  • Help develop a system for managing stakeholder engagement
  • Develop outreach materials
  • Join committee meetings
  • Gather creative content and statements from stakeholders (Heli ski and cat skiing operations) to help develop community facing campaigns announcing the program.
  • Develop a Campus Kit and Activation Guide that can be distributed to University Students, Outdoor and Ski Clubs that want to get involved with POW.
  • Help create, compile, and distribute outreach materials for the Retail and Resort Programs.
  • Assist with policy communications for the Chapter Program.
  • Develop member engagement strategy for Chapter Program.
  • Support existing chapters and help expand Chapter Program into new communities across Canada.
  • Aid in the development of an organization-wide Diversity and Inclusion Policy.
  • Help with data entry and admin for launching our fall recruitment campaign.

Connaissances et compétences

The Ideal Candidate will possess:

  • A Bachelors degree in Social Sciences with a good understanding of environmental issues
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A strong understanding of Climate Science, policy and solutions
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Comfort with Google Drive and associated programs (Google Docs, Sheets,Powerpoint)
  • An interest in organizing for change in the climate change arena.
  • An interest in the outdoors, skiing or snowboarding and hiking.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, mission driven organization.
  • A creative, forward thinking mindset.
  • A positive attitude and good work ethic.

Scolarité requise

A Bachelors degree in Social Sciences with a good understanding of environmental issues

Eligibility criteria

Les stagiaires admissibles :

  • Sont âgés de 15 à 30 ans au début du stage
  • Sont citoyens canadiens, résidents permanents ou détenteurs du statut de réfugié au Canada1
  • Sont légalement autorisés à travailler en vertu des lois et règlements provinciaux et fédéraux applicables
  • Sont disponibles à travailler pour une durée flexible allant jusqu’à 6 mois d’ici le 1er mars 2021
  • N’ont pas été employés par l’employeur avant le début du stage (ne s’appliquent pas aux placements ou stages étudiants antérieurs, mais cela doit être clairement identifié par l’employeur)
