Description

The Conservation Incentive Program Assistant will play an integral role in delivering stewardship and science activities through collaborative conservation and incentive programs with landowner and partner organizations in all 10 Natural Areas of the Manitoba Region – Tall Grass Prairie, Riding Mountain, Whitemouth River Watershed, Oak Lake Sandhills and Wetlands, West Souris Mixed-Grass Prairie, Souris River Valley Grassland, Lower Qu’Appelle Assiniboine Quill Lakes, Interlake, Prairie Pastures and Assiniboine Delta.

The Conservation Incentive Program Assistant will contribute to NCC’s work in Manitoba by assisting Stewardship and Science staff with the research, analysis, development and delivery of conservation programming focused on engagement, incentives and partnership building with agricultural partners and private landowners.

The position may include extensive travel and independent fieldwork and requires liaising with landowners, staff, volunteers and partner organizations.

Tâches et responsabilités

• Review and synthesis of knowledge and science on existing ecological goods and services, stewardship credit, and other incentive programming in North America and around the world;
• Assist with the development and coordination of NCC Manitoba’s internal programming, and NCC’s approach and role in multi-partner incentive programs focused on species at risk and biodiversity outcomes
• Coordination with partner organizations that include local governments and communities, and conservation, agricultural and academic organizations
• Assist with developing cost-effective implementation and biodiversity outcome monitoring approaches for incentive programming, as well as analyzing and summarizing lessons learned
• Biological inventory, field data collection and annual monitoring (i.e. rare plant and wildlife documentation, ecological community classification and condition assessments), data entry into Land Information Systems and GIS, photograph documentation, analysis and reporting
• Develop content for communication materials for a range of audiences that includes academics, conservation and industry partners, and the general public;
• Other field and office duties as assigned.

Connaissances et compétences

• Familiarity with active land management activities (e.g. livestock grazing, prescribed fire, haying, weed control);
• Experience interpreting and communicating policy and scientific publications
• Knowledge of Species at Risk; vegetation community types; prairie, forest and wetland ecology and ability to monitor ecological health;
• Experience in designing, implementing, analyzing and reporting on the effectiveness of land management/stewardship activities;
• Experience in collecting, organizing and analyzing natural resource data;
• Experience in developing technical reports, scientific papers, monitoring protocols and presentations;
• Proficient in computer usage, including data entry, statistical analysis, Internet and MS Office applications;
• Analyzing, manipulating and interpreting data, including statistics, spreadsheet applications, GPS and ESRI/ArcGIS software;
• Analytical and detailed oriented, creative, proactive thinker;
• Ability to work independently (with attention to detail), seek assistance and input as required, and to work on interdisciplinary teams;
• Experience managing, prioritizing and completing tasks independently and on schedule;
• Experience with project planning and management;
• Ability to take a project from background research to action in a short period of time;
• Self-motivated, superior time management skills, ability to meet deadlines;
• Strong communication, interpersonal and writing skills;
• Strong interest in the environmental field and the vision and mission of NCC;
• Ability to work under adverse climatic conditions.

Scolarité requise

• University graduate from a Natural or Agricultural Sciences Program with a focus on biology, ecology, environmental studies or closely related field.

Certifications requises

• Wilderness or Standard First Aid Training;
• Valid Driver’s License, with ability to rent a car;
