This is an exciting opportunity for a new graduate from Chemical Laboratory Technology (CLT) Program or similar to join the Centre for Energy Research in Clean Unconventional Technology Solutions (CERCUTS) which is affiliated with the NSERC-IRCC program within the Applied Research and Innovation Services (ARIS) department, at SAIT. The main responsibilities will be providing assistance in the areas of clean technologies associated with produced water treatment, GHG emission testing and high temperature and high pressure treatment systems. These projects may include experiments associated with prototype functional testing, bench and pilot scale operation, as well as various chemical testing on bench top and instrumentation using standard methods, ASTM methods, EPA methods or equivalent. Projects may include industry quality or environmental and regulatory compliance testing. Reporting to the Laboratory Coordinator and the Project Lead, the candidate will be a key team member working towards the successful set up and implementation of applied research and technology development projects while demonstrating a good understanding of applicable chemical, environmental, and health and safety regulations.

Tâches et responsabilités

Duties and responsibilities
1. Collecting gas, water or soil samples and conducting analytical tests with various analytical instruments;
2. Travelling to field/other facilities locally or in other places across Canada for on-site experiments as per the projects' requirements;
3. Assisting in the operation and testing of bench or pilot prototypes on new products, processes or clean technologies in the area of fluids, gases, solids and wastes that are related to our current project needs;
4. Sampling and operating analytical/chemical instrumentation for conducting a variety of testing like toxicity, leachates, NA, carboxylic acids, voe, BOD, COD, pH, TSS, oil and grease and dissolved metals, GHG and air quality Participating in verification activities such as the SAIT lab and External lab- third party validation;
5. Assisting with method development and conducting the analysis for metals, anions, and other parameters;
6. Attending training on instrument operation and assisting with instrument maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical instruments and/or various types of test equipment;
7. Preparing, writing, updating and submitting accurate analytical reports and/or technical presentations
8. Demonstrating strict HS&E compliance and participating in or conducting safety inspections; Cleaning up after experiments, maintaining good lab housekeeping, segregation and appropriate chemical waste disposal;

9. Shadowing and assisting research engineers and research scientists with various industry partners/projects.

 

Connaissances et compétences

Some exposure to sample collection and analysis, and an overview of hydraulic fracturing, CSS, and SAGO water treatment and OTSG steam generation, thermodynamics, energy efficiency and emission reduction IOT, CLEAN-TECH innovation with Direct Methane fuel cell based clean power generation, (lithium, vanadium, salt etc., based energy storage systems) is preferable but not necessary. Additionally, capabilities should include: an understanding and working knowledge of good laboratory practices, chemical instrumentation in order to operate an ICP, GCMS, FTIR, IC, SEM/XR0, HPIC, Dean Stark equipment, titrator, etc., chemical laboratory safety and associated regulatory requirements. A positive attitude, solid work ethic, honesty, professionalism and timely feedback is important. Further a willingness to adapt and meet deadlines within a dynamic and changing environment is required as interactions will involve industry clients from various industrial sectors. Strong inter-personnel and communications skills are a must along with the ability to work independently or in a team setting.

Scolarité requise

Minimum Requirements, graduate from the Chemical Lab Technologist Program at SAIT or an equivalent/higher program in Canada.

Certifications requises

• Standard First Aid, CPR level A, WHMIS and H2S Alive (Training will be provided for candidates)
