Employers can hire an intern for 6-12 months in a full-time position related to the use or development of clean tech, and CICan will contribute up to 70% of the intern’s salary, to a maximum of $15,000.
Clean tech refers to technologies that help create a cleaner environment, such as technologies that support sustainable development, green industrial or agricultural processes, alternative energy and efficiencies, recycling, composting or waste reduction, protection and restoration of ecosystems, and industries or businesses working on innovations to improve the environment.
Who can participate?
Eligible employers must have an established payroll system, a process for supervising and mentoring interns, and be a Canadian company or subsidiary in one of the following categories:
- Post-secondary education institution
- Indigenous organization or association
- Small- or medium-sized enterprise (SME), less than 500 employees
- Large corporation, more than 500 employees
- Non-government organization (NGO)
- Not-for-profit organization
- Municipal or local government
- Provincial or territorial government, institution, agency or Crown corporation
The subsidy cannot be used for:
- Currently filled positions
- To replace an employee who is on leave
- For a current employee moving to a new position
Positions that qualify for a subsidy are:
- 6-12 months in duration
- A minimum of 30 hours per week
- In a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) field
- Positions with a clean tech component or within a clean tech employer
- Addressing climate change or environmental challenges
Qualified interns are:
- Post-secondary students and graduates
- No more than 30 years of age at the start of the internship
- Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada*
- Legally allowed to work according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations
- Not receiving employment insurance during their internship
- Available to work for at least six months
- Not previous participants of a federal youth employment program
- Not employees of the hiring employer prior to the start of their internship (does not apply to previous coop students or student interns)
*Refugee protection must be conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Persons awaiting refugee status, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, student visa or work visa, are ineligible to participate in a Youth Employment Strategy initiative.
