Colleges and institutes from across the country are offering a new micro-certificate in response to COVID-19 that will help address the labour shortages in the long-term care sector. Become an employer partner and welcome trainees into your workplace!
Role of a Supportive Care Assistant
The new Supportive Care Assistant (SCA) Program is a fully subsidized micro-certificate that allows students to discover a new career and provide much needed support to those living and working in long-term care.
Students complete six-weeks of online training including learning modules such as Professionalism; Supportive client-centred care; Communication; Personal care; and Infection control & safety.
Once the required training modules are completed, students begin their work placement in a long-term or home care setting. They assist certified personal care providers* and the health-care team to support clients. The role involves performing non-clinical activities which could include:
- Assisting with meals
- Assisting with cleaning and disinfecting
- Stocking materials required by clients and health-care staff
- Making clients’ beds, cleaning their rooms and other areas
- Providing companionship, comfort, and support
- Assisting with moving about and accompanying clients as they move about
- Participating in activities with clients
*personal care providers are also called personal support workers, health care aides, and other titles depending on the province or territory.
Role of an Employer Partner
You will receive a $5,000 wage subsidy per student. Students will assist your staff in the day-to-day activities of your facility, allowing your health-care team to focus on providing care. These students will have the opportunity to learn more about working in the sector and will become a new pool of candidates for filling future staffing needs.
As an employer partner, you will provide students with 560 hours of paid work over the 16-week placement. Additionally, your responsibilities include:
- Providing regular supervision and mentoring
- Providing appropriate learning experiences that allow the student to meet the expected competencies based on their skills and knowledge
- Providing regular constructive feedback
- Providing any additional training needed to complete the paid work placement
- Providing wrap around supports for students (i.e., academic support, financial counseling, personal counseling, learning services) while on the paid work placement
- Insurance requirements and additional requirements as identified in the agreement
To be eligible as an employer partner and to receive the wage subsidy, you must meet identified eligibility criteria that include:
- Licensure requirements
- Insurance requirements
- Willingness to host the student(s)
- A signed agreement with Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan)
- A signed affiliation agreement with the delivery institution
- Approval by the delivery institution
